Description
Quater F-OD contains L-methylfolate, which is a form of B vitamin that occurs naturally in many foods.
Methyl Folate (5S)(5-methyltetrahydrofolate or 5-MTHF) is the most biologically active form of folic acid used
at the cellular level for DNA reproduction, the cysteine cycle and the regulation of homocysteine.
It is a preferred form of folate as it is directly absorbed by the human organism for certain metabolic processes.
Folate is needed in the human body for production of red blood cells. A lack (deficiency) of folate in the human
body can be caused by diseases, by taking certain medication or by not getting enough folate in your diet.
Folate deficiency can lead to decreased red blood cells, or anemia. L-methylfolate is a medical food for use in people
who have conditions related to folate deficiency. L-Methyl Folate is the 4th generation development in folate delivery.
With certain inherited errors in metabolism and under a variety of physiologic stresses, the transformation of folic acid
into the active form of folate either does not properly take place or is inadequate. Unlike folic acid, this form of folate
can cross the blood-brain barrier. Methyl folate is needed to support cardiovascular and neurologic health and proper
cell division. Folate supplementation during pregnancy has been shown to reduce risk of neural tube birth defects.
Both folic acid and L-methylfolate are important for a healthy pregnancy, but they differ in how they are processed by the body. Folic acid is the synthetic form found in supplements and fortified foods, while L-methylfolate is the active form of folate naturally found in the body and some supplements. While both can help prevent neural tube defects, L-methylfolate may be a better option for those with certain genetic variations or absorption issues that make it difficult to convert folic acid into its active form.
L Methylfolate is used to treat low red blood cell levels due to various complications or long-term diseases. It is used to prevent and treat the low levels of folic acid in the blood during certain health conditions (anaemia, pregnancy, inadequate diet, surgery recovery).
Each tablet contains:
L-Methylfolate (USP) …………………. 1000mcg
Quater F-OD tablets are used in the following conditions:
- In people who have high levels of certain amino acid in their blood, a condition called hyperhomocysteinemia. The condition can be related to folate deficiency or may be caused by receiving methotrexate.
- In women with high-risk pregnancies who need additional folate in their diets to prevent hyperhomocysteinemia.
- In people with certain types of anemia (a lack of red blood cells) that may be complicated by folate deficiency.
- In people with major depressive disorder who have folate deficiency.
- Quater F-OD is used together with anti-depressant medications in people with major depressive disorder and low folate levels.
- In people with schizophrenia who have hyperhomocysteinemia related to folate deficiency.
Known hypersensitivity to any of the components present in this product.
